In class we watched 3 different openings from previous media studies students and rated them on five different criteria; Originality, Creativity, Performances, Professionalism, Intrigue. Below are the films that we watched and my ratings for them.
Broken

I liked some of this opening, the bits with the boy in the dark inside a room, but then the bits when someone's running with a camera I don't think is very good, it's a good idea but it just goes on for too long. Also the fight scene is too staged and looks a bit fake, again at the end with the three people standing outside the window with the gun looks a bit too staged and doesn't look that realistic compared to Hollywood blockbusters but on the other hand AS Media students don't have the same budgets as Hollywood blockbusters do.
The Abduction

Compared to the previous film I though this opening was better, although at one point in the film it shows a group of people who are supposed to be the media and they are all the same age and their cameras are just hand held ones that you have at home not proffessional cameras news crews use. Apart from that I think this opening is quite good.

Although I couldn't find the video for this film from what I remember of it, it was about a child who goes missing and her mother looks for her. I thought this opening was quite, at times the performaces of the actors wasn't that great but like I've said before these openings aren't professional and doesn't necessarily use professional actors.
Examples of professional film openings
Film openings for each genre are different, depending on the genre the mood of the opening differs.
The opening of "Edward Scissorhands" in classic Tim Burton style is completely different to say a children's film opening like "Mr. Magorium's Magic Emporium".
In class we watched a number of different openings in class one being "The Graduate" this opening is simple and not much happens in it, it's just Dustin Hoffman in an airport walking to Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence". Compared to the other opening we watched which was "Amores Perros" it is completely different to "The Graduate" which was a car chase with a dying dog in the back.
We also watched the opening of "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", the opening of "The Breakfast Club" you see a bit about each of the characters, through narration you learn that one of them is the Princess, another the Jock, Criminal, Geek and Basketcase. In "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" he breaks the fourth wall and talks directly to the audience.
