Today I went on set of the BBC drama "One Night" I was originally going to help out around the set with my Dad but then was asked to be one of the background artists.
When I arrived on set at 7 in the morning it was freezing, I was bundled up in my coat and warm mittens and scarf only to then go to the costume department where I had to chang into "summer clothes"!! I also went to hair and makeup and had a touch up of makeup and my hair put into a high bun. The scene I was in was supposed to be shot in the "height of summer" but due to the London riots, some scenes had to be delayed. This scene has now been filmed in October on a cold, rainy day in the outskirts of London. I was playing an A-Level student on her way home from school with her younger sister. I had to wear a skirt without any tights and a strap top, I also had a thin blouse over the top although that did nothing to shield me from the wind. Another girl and I walked up and down a road numerous times, it was really windy and on the verge of rain. In between takes the costume department came out and bundled us up in parka coats to keep us warm while setting up the next shot.
This scene will probably be in the show for less than a minute but shooting it took an hour. We did about 8 takes and we had to keep waiting for the clouds to pass away from the sun for the optimum light.
I have also been helping around the office with some of the paperwork.
I also was a stand-in artist when I had to sit on a sofa while they aligned the camera to the correct position.
Holding the boom mike whilst they were filming so they could get the sound right I found quite hard because the mike was heavy and I have no upper arm strength! I had to hold it twice, once crouching down and the other holding it above my head. The second time I held it my arms were shaking because the take took so long!
It has been an interesting experience and I've learnt a lot about how you set up scenes and all the different elements that come together for a show to be recorded.
